It takes the reader out of their own selfish world for a while and makes them think more broadly than their own desires.
I think that may be a big part of why I would give it a pass. The very nature of the genre takes the reader out of the claustrophobic everyday world. More importantly, it also takes the writer out of it. Even if it's done "on demand," the writer has to move out of narrow places and come up with a whole world.
